Needs of a Paintball Sniper

Paintball Sniper asked:

What do you need in order to be a successful paintball sniper? You have basic personality needs, equipment needs, and the proper strategy. All of these combined will give you the tools you need to become a paintball sniper but you will have to put all of these together on your own to really be triumphant.

First you need to make sure you have the basic traits needed to be successful. You need to be patient. There are many matches that will have you stuck in positions for long periods of time before the perfect shot comes into focus. You will also be playing alone for the most part so you should be comfortable being in that role. This really can take out some of the basic fun of paintball which is the camaraderie but if you can get through this then you will be ahead of the game. You also have to be a confident paintballer. You will be waiting for long periods of time by yourself waiting on the perfect shot and you need to be sure that you can make it when the time comes because you usually only have that one shot.

You will not need much extra equipment other than your basic paintball needs. You will of course need a marker (gun) if you do not already have one. Most guns shoot the same distance because of industry guidelines keeping the speed of the paintballs exiting the barrel at less than 300 feet per second. So it is more important to find a marker that is comfortable to you so you can be your most accurate and consistent when the times comes for the shot. If you do have a marker you are comfortable with then you can simply purchase a paintball sniper kit that can convert your marker into a paintball sniper gun or buy the sniper gun parts separate such as a barrel or scope. You can get a paintball sniper barrel that will put more backspin on the paintball and slightly increase range but it is very difficult to increase range and not lose accuracy. You also need to match the paint you use to the barrel. A paintball sniper scope can also help some. High powered scopes are mostly useless in paintball because the markers will not have the range to make good use of this type of scope. I prefer a simple red dot scope cause of its ease of use and effectiveness at short and long range. Clothing can also enhance your effectiveness as a paintball sniper. One of the main keys to being a great sniper is stealth and a good camouflage outfit can greatly decrease your visibility. Some paintball snipers prefer a ghillie suit which are the best but can be pricey but you can do about the same with a camouflage suit that matches your surroundings. All of this equipment will help but will mean nothing if you don’t use your head.

Thinking through the match calmly, using your teammates, and having the proper strategy are the attributes that will separate you from the rest of the paintball snipers. Some of these you will have already and some you may have to develop. You need to be able to find a good hiding spot where you can be comfortable. Then you need to be able to use your teammates to help in putting targets in the proper position to get a good shot. You will also have to use your head to know when it is the proper time to take the shot. If you are lacking in one of these areas, practice time can help you get better. Practice will make you comfortable with your surroundings which will calm you down and allow you to use your teammates to implement the strategy you are using.

Be patient once you find a hiding spot (your suit will hide you), use your teammates to implement your strategy (always be thinking), then use the proper equipment and be confident that you will make the perfect shot at the perfect time and make that one shot kill.

Sniper Paintball Gun

Debra Atkins asked:

Out of all the position in the sport of paint ball games, one of the interesting and demanding is the position of the paintball sniper. The use of speed, agility and stealth to hide, track and shoot from a long range gives the position of the sniper very interesting aspects. With patience and practice, along with using the proper equipment, you will become a trained sniper. Sneaking around, hiding and then ambushing your opponent can lead to a whole lot of fun. Learning to use the proper equipment and your surroundings can be a little bit more difficult then you might first think it would be.

The most important piece of equipment in the sniper scenario is the paintball sniper gun. The barrel is longer in length. When Tippman Paintball Gun introduced the .68 Caliber 22 Inch Super Barrel, the sniper role just got a little more enjoyable. This sniper barrel is designed for the quite stealth that is needed for the role. The holes in the end of the barrel helps to keep the opponent from hearing you or your gun. Also important is the weight of the gun. If you are to be stationary and hold the gun in the same position for and extended amount of time, the weight is a big issue. You do not need to be shifting the gun around, moving to give away your position. Also if you are running, the weight of the gun will be an issue also.

It is a good idea to know your playing field. If it is the first time at the field, try to get there early and walk through the area. This knowledge will help to determine the paintball accessories you may need such a clothes, gear or any other paintball supplies you may need. You will want to blend in with the surrounding so the choice of clothing is important. If you will be stationary or moving around quite a bit may determine if you will need knee pads, elbow pads or such items. Make certain with the opposing team about the rules. It makes for a better game if both teams know the rules and there is no conflict later. For example, are both teams to use certain equipment like the paintball grenades or the land mines. Keeping the equimpent on both sides even makes for a better game.

Also, in the role of the sniper you will be seen or caught. Use each time to evaluate the hows and why you was caught. What could you have done to prevent this? Would simple things like a different color outfit for that terrain have helped? Was it some small movement of your body that caught the attention of the other team? Was a part of your body exposed? Would simple things like the knee or elbow pads have made you more comfortable and therefore not moved to have been caught? Would a vest that holds more supplies and accessories have helped?  Not many people are what is called natural born snipers so take a few minutes to determine why you was caught and what can be done to prevent it next time.  It takes the trail and error to become a skilled sniper, so have fun, learn as you go and enjoy the game.

Aiming For The Kill: Finding The Perfect Paintball Gun

Riley Hendersen asked:

So you’ve joined a few paintball games and now the adrenaline rush is in your blood. You want to be more than just a casual gamer, and so that brings up the question of what you should buy for equipment. The first obvious piece is the paintball gun. But how can you know which gun is right for you?

Purchasing the right paintball gun is a big step, and can be a pretty steep financial price depending on how expensive or advanced a weapon you want to buy. One of the things you should do is play with as many rented guns or borrowed guns as possible. There is a very wide variety of paintball guns from expensive to cheap, and some very good cheap ones, and you want to find the ones that you are comfortable with. This is also the right time to figure out your budget. There is no point in finding the perfect $700 gun if you aren’t willing to spend more than $200.

Don’t forget to ask the experts around you about what they think as far as paintball guns. Find out what fellow paintball enthusiasts at paintball fields, stores, and clubs think. Don’t only find out which guns they like and dislike, but find out the reasons for each individual’s opinions. Some may like their gun overall, but not like certain features. Decide the size and type of paintball loader you want. A bigger loader holds more balls, but is heavier. Are you a sniper, or a “spray and pray” type? This makes a difference as to which guns, models, and accessories are best for you.

A major decision to make involving paintball guns is how long a barrel you want on your paintball gun. A longer barrel is generally slightly more accurate, but this is only true to a certain extent. A barrel is more accurate to about 14 inches. There are several ones around 21, but these are showy, and are not a good idea. Most experts agree that after 14 inches the extra length doesn’t help at all, and it leaves a much larger target for other players to hit.

Once your order a paintball gun, be sure to learn everything about it. You should learn how to completely take apart the gun, and then put it back together. You should know how to clean it, load it, fire it, and repeat. It is always good to know this before extensive use. There are some great cheap paintball guns, but there are many more that are junk, so be sure to do your homework before making a purchase.

Buying a paintball gun can be a great experience, but you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a cheap piece of crap, and likewise you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a gun that just doesn’t fit your style. Do your research, take your time to figure out what type of paintball gun best fits your personality, then buy it. The perfect model paintball gun will make you a far happier player than a mismatch.
