Finding A Place To Play: Paintball Fields

Riley Hendersen asked:

For the paintball enthusiast, there are many different paintball fields from which to play. Part of this is the enormous popularity the sport has managed to garner for itself. A simple search typed in any internet search engine for “paintball fields” will bring up fields in virtually every state in the United States. This gives people many different options as to where to play and when.

There are several types of paintball fields. While some are indoors, most are based in the great outdoors. One of the most interesting things about the sport of paintball is the places where it can be played. While you should only play where it is safe, and where you have permission from any landowners, that really doesn’t limit your various options. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of places to play. This isn’t only true of the outdoors, where finding a paintball field isn’t hard at all, but it is also true of cities and towns, many of which will have their own indoor arenas that are used for paintball.

There are many types of outdoor paintball fields, and the terrain can vary from wooded areas, to relatively open fields, to paintball fields decked out with props like fake buildings, old cars, haystack walls, jerry-rigged forts, and whatever else the creative and active mind can conjure up. The variety often amazes beginners.

The woods are a natural and exciting place to play paintball. To many paintball players, the perfect paintball field is in the woods. In their minds this is the “purest” (i.e. most traditional) form of the sport. The thought behind this is that these fields are more like real-world combat. Players have to learn to use stealth, to work as a team, and often times when the paintball field is in the woods, fighting tends to break out spontaneously when one group fires on another from a cover position.

Another popular form is by having the paintball field at a “scenario field.” Which is an area that is designed similar to an urban assault and often has fake or basic buildings. The most advanced ones are even multi-story, and cover seems natural like in a city. This type of game leads to really fast action and sudden dramatic turns in who is winning and who is losing. This would be almost the complete opposite of a “speedball field” which is a very generic term used to describe fields with bunkers, haystacks, or just random obstacles across and otherwise open playing area.

Indoor paintball fields offer a very different experience from outdoor play. The first thing many new players notice when coming indoors is that paintball guns inside can be very loud. Because of limited space, play at an indoor arena is fast and furious, and will give you a massive adrenaline rush.

There are as many different types of paintball fields as there are players, and finding your best game in paintball might be just as easy as finding your preferred paintball field.

4 Paintball Games you Can Have Some Real Fun With!

Art Luff asked:

Paintball games have grown in diversity, developing into an assortment of tournaments and games. As its popularity grows so do the number of folks that try it. If you haven’t tried your hand at the paintball game, loosen up and don’t deprive yourself of some real fun. I’ve compiled a short list below. There are more but this should peak your interest.

Capture the Flag

2 Strategies:

1. Played by two teams, where each team has a flag and the objective of both teams is to capture or seize the opponent’s flag and carry it to your team’s starting point.

2. Another way is by eliminating the opposing team entirely.

Each team has to defend their base and simultaneously dispatch team players to eliminate the opponent and capture their flag.

These games are usually played in the forest; bunkers and structures can be put up throughout the area.

Scenario Paintball

This is a paintball game with a theme set up behind it: there are an endless number of themes that can be created making the game feel and look very realistic. There are a number of players; in many cases as many as a hundred are involved in each team.

Each team gets the theme (storyline) a day before the start of the game. There are usually two teams participating, having the general as a team’s leader.

Each player is given a role and they should work together as a team in order to carry out and win an assigned mission. Props in accordance with the theme are introduced and distributed throughout the field. There are questions asked in connection with the theme and points are awarded for correct answers.

These points are totaled at the conclusion of the game and the team having the most number of points wins.

Backyard

This can be played right at your own backyard, a friend’s empty property or at times any property but you must as you get permission first. You gather your friends to form a group and then conceptualize your own game which typically is capture the flag.

Speedball

Also called Center Flag, the speedball field is designed with many huge bunkers; usually inflatables filled with air that are shaped similar to big snakes, soda cans, water tanks etc.

Here, a team can be composed of between three to ten players in a game. There is only one flag that is involved and it is located at the center of a field. The two teams start at each end of the field and attempt to gain possession of the flag at the center and carry it to their bunker. The team that does this successfully wins.

Paintball Tournaments can surely challenge the “soldier” in you. Tournaments attract many spectators of all ages, as it is a very exciting game to watch. The sport of paintball has a distinct and accurate set of rules that are strictly followed. The producer of the tournament is the absolute authority in regard to either an alteration or addition to the rules; marshals oversee the event, and their decision is always final.

There must be a lot of team work involved, as everyone moves through the field. As a team member moves, there should be others to guard and keep watch and give off covering shots when necessary. A team that moves together with a common objective will have a great chance of succeeding in this game.

Communication in the field is also very important. A team-mate can shout the position of the opponent. The moment that a player is seen, the game for that player is up; so there is no reason for you to keep quite; instead, inform the others the location of the enemy.

The excitement of this game concludes when you are seen and eliminated – a situation that all team players struggle to avoid.

Give it a shot!

The Many Genres of Paintball

Mike Mitchell asked:

Paintball, while extremely fun and invigorating, isn’t the end all to be all of the game. There around about six different genres of paintball play including, scenario paintball, woodsball, tournament, tourney ball and speedball. To further the point, speedball itself can be subcategorized into airball and hyperball. This article is going to go over these genres and explain what fun they provide.

Woodsball

It is said that woodsball is the birth of paintball. As the name describes the game is played in the woods. The primal and natural setting adds much more dimension to the paintball played in a controlled arena. Since the game is played au natural, it is a game of stealth and requires the players to stalk their opponents. The area the game is played in offers the capacity for dozens and dozens of players.

Keeping quiet, playing possum and keeping watch are the strategies woodsball players excel in having. Being sneaky is imperative because paintball markers (guns) are really loud when they are fired and as a result the players will do everything possible to avoid that. There are markers that act the same way a silencer acts for a real gun by offering a much quieter release. Any obstacle to upholding the secrecy of a team’s location is sure to be averted and a player’s accuracy when firing is quintessential in this effort.

The great thing about woodsball is that the players can custom fit their theme to their imaginations. They aren’t forced to conform to a scenario and have free range to dream up any character and story they wish!

Speedball

This form of the game is as its name bluntly suggests, fast! It’s not played on a broad field rather speedball is held in close accommodations like around the size of a high school indoor basketball court. The same props used to offer players shelter from their opponents are used in speedball and are evenly placed to offer both teams places to duck and cover.

Unlike in woodsball, the players shoot like there’s no tomorrow and are usually closer to their intended targets. Due to its quick style, speedball is a surefire way to practice your aloofness and dexterity. Because of this, this style of paintball is normally used for paintball training.

Scenario

Scenario paintball is a lot like woodsball. It’s based on specific scenario and the players each have roles to play. This sort of paintball play usually involves a great deal of players and is done on a very large field and lasts way longer than traditional paintball or speedball, commonly lasting for days at a time.

Airball and Hyperball

Airball is a form of speedball that is very common and highly popularized. Hyperball uses different types of markers made up of uneven pipes. Both Airball and hyperball is played on a rectangular shaped field.

Of all the possible ways to play, paintball has become a highly sought after game and widely played sport. Pick your poison. For the super athletic and fast paced speedball may be for you. With the sneaky may prefer a game woodsball. No matter the genre you choose be safe and have fun.
