Paintball is a growing sport that can be played both indoors and outdoors with everyone having their own preference as to which is better. The scenario games are much more fun and really need to be played outside. With the popularity of paintball there are outdoor paintball fields popping up all over and there is sure to be one somewhere near you. The thing that is cool about the larger fields is that there are all kinds of hiding places to use and explore.

Most of the outdoor paintball fields are located in wooded areas or in large open fields that have been modified with buildings, castles, bunkers, junk cars, etc. These are really cool because they help to recreate an urban warfare experience, kind of good training and practice for military guys too.

The type of paintball games played in wooded areas is sometimes called “Woodsball” and is the most realistic form of paintball for most paintball players. When you are playing the sport in the woods it is simulating jungle warfare and you really have to be up on jungle skills. Stealth and camouflage is important is these games and can make or break your success on this type of field. Someone with excellent skills could be lying right next to you and you wouldn’t know it until they popped you. On the other side of the coin there are also team variations that are very well played out in wooded scenarios where working together and knowing when to fire and when to duck and cover is crucial.

There are fields being developed now called scenario fields which are mostly played at commercial paintball locations with the most popular being the urban assault fields. These fields are made up of false structures many times resembling multiple story buildings with window cutouts to make for easy sniper shooting. They also will feature junked cars to hide behind and many other urban related objects. These types of games play out extremely fast and are always full of action and adventure.

Still another type of field is the speedball field with numerous bunkers all over. Most of these fields are lager although the smaller ones can be fun to play with the bunkers closer together which causes continual firefights from start to finish. If you intend to play on this type of field you need to have excellent awareness and good peripheral vision to keep from being hit quickly and put out of the game. The way the bunkers are placed usually will not give you full cover so you constantly have to move and adjust your position.

Whether you choose to play indoors or outdoors, wooded field or on a scenario field one thing is for sure, you will have fun.

It has come to our attention that there are a lot of people out there that don’t really know that there are different types of paintball. Our mission is to help those poor lost souls and open their eyes to what awaits them in the world of paintball. Although there are many variations of the game of paintball we don’t want to overwhelm you so we will stick to the main three. Now these may arguably be the main three but for the sake of this article we will say that they are the main three variations of paintball and they are Woodsball, Speedball, and Scenario Paintball.

Woodsball is oldschool paintball at its heart. Paintball started off for the most part being played in wooded areas which lent themselves to the "capture the flag" and "elimination" type paintball games to be played. Because woodsball can be played over several acres and there are usually not many areas where large portions of the field can be viewed at one time, woodsball games tend to run longer than other types of paintball play. Wooded areas also give players the ability to take part in some more realistic wartime situations such as ambushes, assualts on fortified positions and protecting VIP’s etc..

Speedball differs from woodsball in a number of ways. One of the most obvious differences is the look and size of the field. As opposed to the large and natural landscape of woodsball, speedball is played usually on artifical turf with artificial bunkers on a field that is typically no larger than half of a football field in size. The artifical obstacles and bunkers have evolved over the years, in the old days of paintball they were made of anything that was laying around mainly larger wooden spools and crates, they then moved onto corrugated sewer piping and eventually evolved into the more costeffective and asthetically pleasing inflatable bunkers that are more popular today.

Scenario paintball games are based on a storyline or theme. Scenario games allow for a wide range of player skill levels and an even larger amount of participants. These games can span a period as short as 12 hours or last for days. Objectives vary based on the storyline but cooperation is a major theme in these games. The largest game to date was Skirmish’s Invasion of Normandy, held annually in Jim Thorpe, PA, which drew 4,007 players in 2006. The summer of 2007 should be another record breaking season for paintball, it should be fun to see.

This would be almost the complete opposite of a “speedball field” which is a very generic term used to describe fields with bunkers, haystacks, or just random obstacles across and otherwise open playing area.

Indoor paintball fields offer a very different experience from outdoor play. The first thing many new players notice when coming indoors is that paintball guns inside can be very loud. Because of limited space, play at an indoor arena is fast and furious, and will give you a massive adrenaline rush.

There are as many different types of paintball fields as there are players, and finding your best game in paintball might be just as easy as finding your preferred paintball field.
