The Advantages Of Playing Paintball Outdoors

Gregg Hall asked:

Paintball is a growing sport that can be played both indoors and outdoors with everyone having their own preference as to which is better. The scenario games are much more fun and really need to be played outside. With the popularity of paintball there are outdoor paintball fields popping up all over and there is sure to be one somewhere near you. The thing that is cool about the larger fields is that there are all kinds of hiding places to use and explore.

Most of the outdoor paintball fields are located in wooded areas or in large open fields that have been modified with buildings, castles, bunkers, junk cars, etc. These are really cool because they help to recreate an urban warfare experience, kind of good training and practice for military guys too.

The type of paintball games played in wooded areas is sometimes called “Woodsball” and is the most realistic form of paintball for most paintball players. When you are playing the sport in the woods it is simulating jungle warfare and you really have to be up on jungle skills. Stealth and camouflage is important is these games and can make or break your success on this type of field. Someone with excellent skills could be lying right next to you and you wouldn’t know it until they popped you. On the other side of the coin there are also team variations that are very well played out in wooded scenarios where working together and knowing when to fire and when to duck and cover is crucial.
There are fields being developed now called scenario fields which are mostly played at commercial paintball locations with the most popular being the urban assault fields. These fields are made up of false structures many times resembling multiple story buildings with window cutouts to make for easy sniper shooting. They also will feature junked cars to hide behind and many other urban related objects. These types of games play out extremely fast and are always full of action and adventure.

Still another type of field is the speedball field with numerous bunkers all over. Most of these fields are lager although the smaller ones can be fun to play with the bunkers closer together which causes continual firefights from start to finish. If you intend to play on this type of field you need to have excellent awareness and good peripheral vision to keep from being hit quickly and put out of the game. The way the bunkers are placed usually will not give you full cover so you constantly have to move and adjust your position.

Whether you choose to play indoors or outdoors, wooded field or on a scenario field one thing is for sure, you will have fun.

The Paintball Gun – A Beginner’s Guide to Recreational and Speedball Guns

kevin asked:

The choices can be overwhelming for a paintball beginner.. So, to simplify, there are two main game types: recreational and speedball. You need to know about these to decide the sort of player you want to be and, therefore, what paintball gun features you will need.

Recreational

Recreational markers are used to play paintball games over a large area, often woods or fields. Scenario paintball is played in an area made to replicate a chosen landscape. Woodsball, as the name suggests, is played in a wooded area. Tactical paintball is a strategic game with a variety of rules.

Sniper paintball guns are for recreational players to shoot accurately over long distances. They often have long barrels that can cause the paintball to spin, thus increasing its distance.

Speedball

Speedball paintball guns are used in more confined areas, often utilising bunkers and obstacles. These games are of shorter duration as the players are within close proximity of each other. Camouflage, therefore, isn’t a consideration, so the markers are more visual and come in a wide variety of colours and designs.

X Ball is a type of speedball game for which any standard speedball paintball gun will suffice.

Recreational and speedball markers have the same internal mechanism; the differences are external only. Recreational guns are generally camouflaged or darker in colours. They often resemble real guns; some have been designed to replicate guns from historic battles. Speedball guns are lighter, smaller and more colourful.

You need a paintball gun that fits the sort of player you are e.g. front, cover or sniper. A front player needs a light, easy to handle gun. A cover player needs a big hopper and air supply. A sniper may need a longer barrel with a scope.

Markers can range in price from $50 to over $1000 depending on quality and features. You don’t need to spend too much money on your first paintball gun. You can upgrade it as and when you need to without difficulty. Try renting or borrowing a range of markers before you make a purchase to find one that is suitable for you and feels right. You should expect to pay around $200 for a gun that will give sufficient performance for a beginner’s needs.

What’s the difference between Speedball and Woodsball? And what the heck is Scenario Paintball?

Mark Etinger asked:

There are basically two ways to Paintball. One is Speedball and the other is Woodsball.  Didn’t know that? Starting to get that Paintball addiction? Well it’s time for you to learn a thing or two.

Speedball and Woodsbal are two special variants of paintball. If you’re just an amateur paintballer, you’ve probably used those commercial paintball parks, the parks that charge you loads of money and let you fool around like a little child.

Then there’s us, paintballers who think paintball should be played in the wild. We pick our own teams and create our own rules. We’re the Woodsballers.

Woodsball is the real deal. It’s called woodsball because, Mr. Sherlock, we play it in the woods. There are no fences, no limits, you can be in the game or run home for your mommy. We use the outdoors, relay on nature, the woods are bunkers and rocks are hideouts. All you need is a gun, some paintballs and probably a couple of your paintballing friends. Want to get in? Try these possible games and scenarios:

•    Elimination – As sweet and simple as it sounds. Kill everybody. By yourself or with a team. Only the strong survive.

•    Capture the Flag – If you’re looking for some tactics, try CTF.  Use flag stations and collect more flags, or have just one flag for each team and claim it for victory.

•    Assault! Get yourselves into two teams. Let one team protect their territory and let the other charge. The attackers should try to eliminate their opponents or take hold of their territory.

Then there’s Speedball. This form of paintball was created mostly for professional competitive paintball and provides a standard field and better viewing possibilities. If you thought that paintball is just for fun, some professional speedballers would probably disagree – speedball turned into a real competitive sport, with teams, coaches, uniforms, merchandizing, sponsorships and the whole shebang.

In speedball, there are between 2 to 10 players in a team. The professional speedballers use smaller guns, because speedball tends to be, well, speedy. Also, the small size of the field makes it hard to camouflage yourself, and there has to be rapid movement and constant communication between the team members.

Scenario Paintball is basically a couple of paintballers who really want to fight in Vietnam. Or on the Enterprise ship. Or just add any theme to their game of paintball. Most of the scenario paintball games are played large-scale with huge crowds and themes like D-Day.

Paintball Pistols: Pros and Cons

kevin asked:

Paintball pistols are small pocket paintball guns loosely resembling pistols. They are either pump action or semi-automatic firing. They are usually .68 caliber and powered by a 12 gram co2 power let or cartridge. They are most successfully used as a sidearm or back-up gun to complement a main weapon of choice. There are pros and cons to carrying paintball pistols as compared to standard paintball guns.

PROS

Paintball pistols are extremely light and portable. They are very useful in woodsball because they are compact and can be kept in a pocket, harness or holster.

They are highly manoeuvrable enabling you to move around corners and across the field more easily. They are useful for those tight spots on the field that require quick responses and the ability to shoot fast and hit hard.

Pistol markers are ideal for bunker assaults and quick hit and run or intimidatory tactics. They make the perfect sidearm in a last resort situation.

Most paintball pistols are quick and easy to reload; Some take literally seconds to drop and reload a new magazine. This makes for much swifter action on the field. They are highly upgradeable and easy to disassemble and clean.

CONS

Because of their shorter barrels, paintball pistols lack the accuracy of a good rifle. Most pistols perform best within a 25-50 meter range. If you need to shoot further, a longer barreled gun is a better option. Shorter barrels give paintballs less time to stabilize before leaving the gun, which results in less accuracy over a greater distance.

Pistols have a smaller ammunition capacity than standard paintball guns. This leaves the player at a severe disadvantage against an opponent.

Paintball pistols have a smaller air capacity and are not as powerful as the longer barreled markers. They are usually powered by a 12 gram co2 cartridge. Depending on the weather conditions and how the pistol is chrono’d, you can only expect around 30 shots from one cartridge. This, again, puts you at a disadvantage against a player with a more powerful weapon.

Paintball pistols have their place in the game. They are light weight, easy to handle, highly manoeuvrable and quick loading. They are particularly handy in scenario ball or woodsball as an efficient sidearm. You must, however, be aware of their limitations and not expect the same performance from them as you would from a standard paintball marker.

The Many Genres of Paintball

Mike Mitchell asked:

Paintball, while extremely fun and invigorating, isn’t the end all to be all of the game. There around about six different genres of paintball play including, scenario paintball, woodsball, tournament, tourney ball and speedball. To further the point, speedball itself can be subcategorized into airball and hyperball. This article is going to go over these genres and explain what fun they provide.

Woodsball

It is said that woodsball is the birth of paintball. As the name describes the game is played in the woods. The primal and natural setting adds much more dimension to the paintball played in a controlled arena. Since the game is played au natural, it is a game of stealth and requires the players to stalk their opponents. The area the game is played in offers the capacity for dozens and dozens of players.

Keeping quiet, playing possum and keeping watch are the strategies woodsball players excel in having. Being sneaky is imperative because paintball markers (guns) are really loud when they are fired and as a result the players will do everything possible to avoid that. There are markers that act the same way a silencer acts for a real gun by offering a much quieter release. Any obstacle to upholding the secrecy of a team’s location is sure to be averted and a player’s accuracy when firing is quintessential in this effort.

The great thing about woodsball is that the players can custom fit their theme to their imaginations. They aren’t forced to conform to a scenario and have free range to dream up any character and story they wish!

Speedball

This form of the game is as its name bluntly suggests, fast! It’s not played on a broad field rather speedball is held in close accommodations like around the size of a high school indoor basketball court. The same props used to offer players shelter from their opponents are used in speedball and are evenly placed to offer both teams places to duck and cover.

Unlike in woodsball, the players shoot like there’s no tomorrow and are usually closer to their intended targets. Due to its quick style, speedball is a surefire way to practice your aloofness and dexterity. Because of this, this style of paintball is normally used for paintball training.

Scenario

Scenario paintball is a lot like woodsball. It’s based on specific scenario and the players each have roles to play. This sort of paintball play usually involves a great deal of players and is done on a very large field and lasts way longer than traditional paintball or speedball, commonly lasting for days at a time.

Airball and Hyperball

Airball is a form of speedball that is very common and highly popularized. Hyperball uses different types of markers made up of uneven pipes. Both Airball and hyperball is played on a rectangular shaped field.

Of all the possible ways to play, paintball has become a highly sought after game and widely played sport. Pick your poison. For the super athletic and fast paced speedball may be for you. With the sneaky may prefer a game woodsball. No matter the genre you choose be safe and have fun.
